About our company
Urbana is an established San Francisco-based retailer with three popular stores. We are seeking a full-time Controller to manage a complex multi-entity accounting operation, oversee monthly/annual closing of ledgers and timely financial reporting for senior management. Our company is poised for growth with the addition of a new Oakland store in March and expansion across Northern California for the next several years.
Job description
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations including AP, AR, payroll, GL accounting and cash management. The role reports to the COO and has daily contact with the CEO. A part-time bookkeeper assists with payables and bank reconciliations. Limited support is provided by a full-time HR Manager and Operations Manager as well as store managers. Industry-specialist CPAs perform a quarterly review of financials for tax and GL integrity. We are a state licensed business that reports to multiple agencies on monthly cycles and has strict compliance obligations. Many reports and filings require the download and integration of data from multiple systems. Accordingly, activity in our finance department is non-stop and requires a skilled financial controller to successfully meet the requirements of a transactional-intense growing business.
Qualified applicants will have prior experience in the retail or hospitality industry as a senior finance team member and the following skills:
- Expert in QuickBooks including custom report development
- Expert in retail analytics and creating insightful reports and dashboard KPIs
- Expert in Microsoft Excel / Google sheets
- Expert in complex bank reconciliations
- Expert in preparation of work papers for state and federal taxes and liaison with outside CPA
- Expert in intercompany transaction reconciliations
- Expert in extracting information from external platforms including POS, payroll, time & attendance, inventory, merchandise return tracking, CRM
- Substantial experience in financial projections, cashflow and breakeven analysis
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
- Candidates with experience in multi-unit retail, hospitality or real estate finance will receive priority consideration.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee weekly AP and bi-weekly payroll
- Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements
- Develop and implement financial policies and procedures
- Manage the budgeting process and provide regular updates to management
- Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and laws
- Audit cash activities including retail cash logs, bank deposits, credit card transactions and vendor discounts
- Participate in the forecasting and planning process
